Thanks to the Series of Tubes Known As The Internets, I've been able to keep up with AMC TV's latest original series, Breaking Bad. If you're not watching this already, either via Cable or um, you know, go get the DVDs when it comes out on Netflix.
Why?
Because it is REALLY good. And I hate most television so that's a bold statement, as Vince Vega might say.
The premise is a bit odd, to be sure: A high school chemistry teacher finds out he's got terminal lung cancer. Through an odd association with a brother in law in Law Enforcement, he finds that one of his lamer students is apparently one of the top meth dealers in Albuquerque. Wanting to provide for his familia after his death, he realizes his talent for chemistry and his recalcitrant ex-student's meth skillz might be a match, and he starts down a very dark, comedic and frankly strange path in his final stages of life.
But this tells us the short version. It doesn't tell us the depth of character development and an amazing storytelling quality to the series we don't see in most television. And it certainly doesn't communicate the amazing performance of Bryan Cranston, whom most of you know as the wacky dad on "Malcolm In The Middle." Now, he was great in that zany comedy (which had its best moment in the series finale), but you realize what separates Truly Good actors from the herd of dumbasses that infect network programming.
In this case we see an actor who was awesome in a sitcom now do a dark comedic drama (dramedy?) and pull it off in a way few of his peers in the television milleu could pull off, since if you're just acting in music videos (think CSI, think Cold Case) you really aren't acting, you're just parroting.
I just saw Episode 5 and it had an emotional punch in the stomach that was truly amazing. It really takes a lot for a guy like me to get moved by a mere TV show, and well, this one did it.
Hey, it beats watching some f*cking reality show, anyway.
I concur! Also, my friend Patty wrote that episode!

[this is good] I just googled "breaking bad is awesome" to see if people were agreeing with me, and it turns out they (you) are. Bryan Cranston is a massive pimp. I already really liked him in Malcolm, but it's good to see him getting some well deserved limelight for a change. I agree with you about the majority of TV shows being absolute drivel by the way... I think the big TV execs are just seeing how badly they can take the piss before everyone finally gets sick of it and picks up a book for a change. Isn't it sad that there are so many people who watch every shitty, brainless reality show under the sun, but have never read a book from start to finish? I fear for our children...
